Propane Energy Pod Builder Incentive Program from PERC

How can you accommodate a homebuyer’s desire for gas when natural gas lines aren’t available? Do what more and more builders and homebuyers all across the country are doing – build and renovate with propane gas. AmeriGas Propane gives today’s homebuyers all the benefits of natural gas – and a greener choice beyond oil and electric.

The Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) has developed a new incentive program that encourages residential builders to implement the Propane Energy Pod model. Through this program, PERC hopes to increase the number of homes that use clean, efficient propane, as well as the number of propane gallons sold within the residential market.

The Propane Energy Pod Builder Incentive Program provides an incentive of up to $1,500 to qualifying and selected builders who construct homes that follow PERC’s Propane Energy Pod model. These homes feature an integrated, whole-home energy package that includes a combination of propane applications—space heating, water heating, cooking, fireplaces, clothes drying, and standby power.

“Demand for greener, more sustainable homes continues to grow within the residential housing market,” said Bridget Kidd, PERC’s director of residential and commercial programs. “Builders can answer that demand by integrating energy-efficient, propane-fueled systems and appliances into the homes they construct. Our new incentive program is designed to both increase awareness of propane’s advantages and make it more attractive to build homes that use propane.”

To qualify for the Propane Energy Pod Builder Incentive Program, builders must meet the following criteria:

- Participant must be a U.S. builder, and at least 18 years of age.
- Participant is limited to five incentives per year, per state.
- Participation is limited to those building companies building less than 75 homes per year.

PERC will take important criteria into consideration when selecting the best possible candidates for the program, such as the applicant’s ability to record and supply data, and the proximity to another Propane Energy Pod Builder Incentive Program applicant. Program participants are required to provide feedback on the propane-fueled appliances they use, giving PERC the opportunity to identify training needs and supplement future propane product development.

Participating builders can choose from two eligible incentive packages for each home that they construct. To qualify for the $1,500 incentive package, homes must use propane for space heating, water heating, and cooking, as well as two other applications, such as fireplaces or clothes drying. Homes that meet all these requirements except for propane-fueled space heating are eligible for the $750 incentive package.

Currently, only new propane-fueled space heating, water heating, cooking, fireplace, and clothes drying systems are eligible appliances under the program. Refurbished or modified equipment will not be considered.

“Our new incentive program creates a mutually beneficial situation for builders, homeowners and propane marketers alike,” Kidd added. “Builders gain a competitive advantage by constructing Propane Energy Pod homes, homeowners can enjoy propane’s comfort and energy-efficiency, and propane marketers can acquire more long-term residential customers.”

The program, a research initiative, provides a financial incentive to qualifying builders who install a suite of propane appliances and agree to give PERC data about the operation of propane equipment in real-world conditions.
