Let’s Hear It For The USA! (and for Grilling Safely this Independence Holiday)

This Friday is the one of the most popular grilling occasions of the Summer and while everyone is focused on grilling great food, we wanted to remind you to be even better at safely grilling that great food. Below, please find tips on how to ensure grilling safety for your holiday cookout.

Placement of Your Grill & Propane Cylinders (Find these safety tips and more on our AmeriGas cylinder wraps as well as on our website here)

  • Use your grill outdoors only. Your propane grill should be placed at least 5 feet away from your home.
  • Use your grill in a well-ventilated area
  • Make sure your grill is not up against dry bushes, flowers or plants
  • Never grill or store a cylinder in any enclosed areas (including trailers, tents, houses and garages)
  • Ensure that the grill is firmly in place and that it is stable and cannot be tipped over

Use of Your Grill

  • Read and follow the grill manual
  • Once lit, never leave a grill unattended
  • Use grilling utensils with long handles to help avoid burns and splatters
  • Avoid clothing with hanging shirt tails, apron strings, etc.
  • Do not allow children near the grill or cylinder
  • Never attempt to move a hot grill
  • Stay away from a hot grill, as the body remains hot for up to an hour after use

Other Propane Cylinders Safety Tips

  • When transporting, keep cylinder secured in an upright position with cylinder valve turned off
  • When in use, store and use cylinder in upright, vertical position
  • When not connected for use, keep cylinder valve turned off

Lastly, some fun facts about grilling in the U.S. (2013 study conducted by the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association (HPBA)):

  • 80 percent of all U.S. households own a grill or smoker
  • 97 percent of grill owners actually used their grill in the past year
  • About 14 million new grills were shipped in 2013 alone.
