Over the past 2 years we have reduced our carbon output by over 5%. This was accomplished through the purchase of Hybrid (diesel/electric) trucks, Propane powered trucks, low emission exhaust systems and through fuel saving programs. All new over the road trucks have auxiliary climate control systems to reduce need to idle. Several new trucks received wide base tires and tire inflation systems to reduce drag and therefore reduce fuel use. All new trucks are set up to shut down after 5 minutes of idling and drivers are being advised to reduce idling. Each hour of idling uses a gallon of fuel and releases 22.2 pounds of Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere so it has a significant impact on our environment.
The Fleet department is committed to look at new technologies that will reduce our Carbon output and again in 2012 plans to pioneer along with our fleet suppliers a new propane engine technology for use in our propane delivery trucks.
