A Day in the Life: Bobtail Driver

Back to Blog List Page

Recently, I had the opportunity to visit one of our local offices for a couple of days to learn more about what life in a district is really like. I enjoyed learning about the different positions and had the opportunity to get their first-hand account of what they do on a daily basis.

One person I had the opportunity to meet was Robert (Bob) Gregory III from our Woodbine, NJ Office. Below is his Day in the Life account of being a Bobtail Driver.

Explain your role with AmeriGas.

I am a Driver so I fill the tanks of both our business and residential customers. In addition I deliver our ACE Cylinders to various local businesses.

How long have you been with AmeriGas?

I have been with AmeriGas just over eight months. I started just in time for the busy winter season.

What is your typical day like?

During the winter months I make between 35-40 deliveries a day. In the summer I make about 20-25 deliveries. The most deliveries I have personally made in one day is 56.

What is your busiest time of the year?

By far winter is definitely the busiest and most challenging time of year.

Does your business change in the summer months?

Summer is a different kind of busy as we deliver to a lot of seasonal homes and businesses being near the beach.

What is your favorite part of your job?

My favorite part of the job is my co-workers. Everyone in the office is really great to work with and everyone really works as a team.

What was your most challenging customer call?

Over the winter I went on a call and the customer’s underground tank had been completely covered over by a huge puddle from the melting snow and rain. I wanted her to get her delivery so I pumped out the water. I had to pump it out three separate times though because if kept filling back up from the neighbor’s yard. This was a lot of extra labor on my part but I knew the customer needed her delivery and I didn’t want her to run out of propane.

What was your most rewarding customer experience?

The call I mentioned above was also my most rewarding. The customer was so grateful and really appreciated all of the extra work I put in to make certain she got her delivery as planned.

What is your favorite pastime outside of the office?

I really like to go hunting and every year I take a three day trip to Virginia to do so.
